Augmentin
Brand Name: Augmentin
Generic Name: Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium (a mox i sil' in) (klav' yoo la nate)
Drug Class: ANTIBIOTICS: PENICILLINS
Why is Augmentin prescribed?
The combination of Augmentin, a penicillin-like antibiotic, and clavulanate potassium is used to treat bacterial infections of the ear, lungs, nose, sinus, skin, and urinary tract. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.
Augmentin is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
How should Augmentin be used?
Augmentin should be taken by mouth. It is usually taken every 8 hours (three times a day) or every 12 hours (twice a day). Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Augmentin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Shake the liquid well before each use to mix the medication evenly.
The chewable tablets should be chewed thoroughly before they are swallowed. The other tablets should be taken with a full glass of water.
Continue to take Augmentin even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Augmentin without talking to your doctor.
Other uses for Augmentin:
Augmentin also is used occasionally to treat venereal disease (VD). Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this drug for your condition.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Augmentin may cause upset stomach. Take with food or milk.
